Po-po-po-pom! Three short notes followed by a long one: this simple rhythmic cell embodies all of Beethoven’s musical genius and his march towards destiny. For his first time at the Festival d’Aix, Thomas Hengelbrock creates a dialogue between the iconic Fifth Symphony and the Pastoral Symphony, both of which premiered during the same concert in Vienna on 22 December 1808.
