OUR ACTIONS

OPERA AWARENESS

Passerelles' awareness-raising initiatives are year-long programmes tailored to all audiences, according to timelines specific to each partner. They include artistic and creative workshops, meetings with technical teams, musical events, and discussions with artists from the Festival.

Each programme begins with partner training in December and is supported by online resources and educational materials that allow for a deeper exploration and understanding of the works scheduled for the Festival.

Introductory Course: this course, intended for young audiences and families, introduces the participants to the many facets of the opera genre (e.g., voice, instruments, sets and costumes) in a creative way.

Discovering-opera Course: this course is designed to prepare young and adult audiences to attend a performance of a Festival production under the best possible conditions, by providing them with the necessary tools to understand and appreciate the work.

Technical-professions Course: tailored to local organisations for professional integration and support and to programmes for specifical vocational training, this course is built around a series of meetings between the Festival’s technical teams and participants (secondary and vocational school students, and adults looking to (re-)enter the job market), who wish to learn about various skills and professions in the performing arts.

At the end of these courses, the participants are invited to an encounter with opera voices and the performing arts

Here’s a quick look back at Au Grand Air, an open-air musical walking path created as part of the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée’s 2024 Au Grand Air session which took place on May 16 and 17, and on May 19 in partnership with the Biennale d'Aix. Led by Violaine Fournier, this artistic outreach programme provided a true professional experience to four artists from the OJM. The session resulted in the creation of a ‘musical journey’ at the Bibémus quarries, specially designed for groups supported by Passerelles, the Festival d’Aix's department of cultural initiatives, and for the Biennale d'Aix audience. 2024 Festival d'Aix-en-Provence © Vincent Beaume

OPEN DAYS: THIRD EDITION

On 12 and 13 March 2020, the Festival d’Aix set-construction and costume-production workshops in Venelles opened their doors to over 400 vocational high school students, university students, young adults, and adults participating in on-the-job training programmes. Through meetings with the technical teams and discussions focused on their careers and their know-how, the participants learned about a variety of professions in the performing arts and discovered life behind the scenes. It was an immersive experience in the process of opera set creation! From the mock-up of a set to the actual performance of a production in various venues of the Festival, the set construction process involves numerous intermediate steps utilizing a myriad of professional skills. Locksmithing; carpentry; pre-assembly; decorating; sculpting; engineering and design; the production of props and costumes; makeup; hairstyling; and sound, video and light management all form the broad range of professions that are key to the creation of an opera!Guided by a facilitator from the Passerelles team, the public, who were split up into smaller groups, met with several members of the technical staff. These professionals described the daily routine of their occupations, which they illustrated with a few of their finished works, while also revealing certain tricks of the trade. It was a special occasion to learn about the technical skills at the heart of these métiers, and to discuss with a team of professionals who are passionate about their trades. The two open days were coordinated by the Passerelles department and the technical direction. With the support of: Région SUD – Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, DRAC (French Regional Cultural Affairs Agency), Conseil départemental du 13.With the suport of: Fondation ENGIE, Fondation La Poste, Fondation CMA CGM.[[{"fid":"21386","view_mode":"media_original","fields":{"format":"media_original","field_file_image_alt_text[fr][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[fr][0][value]":false,"field_caption[fr][0][value]":""},"type":"media","field_deltas":{"4":{"format":"media_original","field_file_image_alt_text[fr][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[fr][0][value]":false,"field_caption[fr][0][value]":""}},"attributes":{"style":"height: 71px; width: 400px;","class":"media-element file-media-original","data-delta":"4"}}]]

"Rencontre en musique" - June 2019

MUSICAL WORKSHOPS WITH PASSERELLES

During the month of June, the Passerelles team of the Festival d’Aix brought opera out of its traditional venues by offering ten musical workshops to partner audiences in over half a dozen towns in the region. Many artists—including the soprano Marie-Laure Garnier accompanied by the pianist Célia Oneto Bensaid, four choristers from the Pygmalion ensemble, the barytone Thomas Oliemans, and quartets from the Académie’s chamber music residency—met with students, adults and senior citizens to share a sensitive and intimate approach to opera with them. On June 21 at 2 p.m., the Selini, Elmire and Agate quartets met with students from grade CM2 (10- and 11-year-olds) from the primary school in Vernegues; 6th-year students (11- and 12-year-olds) from the Collège Collines Durance in Mallemort; and patients from the Centre Hospitalier Montperrin (the Hysope day clinic) in Aix. We followed the primary school students from Vernegues throughout one of these participatory workshops.2:15 p.m. – Time for Music! The students are greeted by a musical excerpt from Haydn played by the Selini quartet. With their eyes closed, each student lets his or her imagination run free to the stream of notes. For some, the music conjures thoughts of arid Egyptian landscapes, with a runaway slave being pursued by a ghost; others see a chase through a dark forest; some evoke a journey through a haunted house; and yet others imagine preparations for a mythical combat. After a moment of conversation and introduction, the students split into groups according to the stories they have shared.2:30 p.m. – To Work! The creative workshop begins: each group works on the spatial representation of their story based on the musical excerpt. One of the musicians from the Selini quartet is present in each of the four groups. To prepare their final creation, they work their body expression, walk in both groups and one by one, and listen to the excerpt repeatedly to meld body and music.3 p.m. – The Silent Opera Takes Shape! The musicians from the Selini quartet gather again to perform the selected excerpt so that the groups can present the broad lines of their project once before the final creation. With each presentation, we understand the stories imagined around this excerpt, without a single word being spoken. The groups then go back to work before presenting their project to all of the participants of that day’s musical workshop. The projects are tweaked in order to polish and perfect the mini-performances.3:30 – Time for the Final Creations! Before an audience of eager children and adults, the magic comes to life! The participants’ expressiveness and their spatial representation of the stories create meaning, and receive a round of applause from the moved audience. The musical workshops are offered as part of Passerelles’s outreach program to raise awareness about opera.Discover below some photos of these workshops organized in June 2019.
