As this year's mentor for the Instrumental Residency, the Quatuor Diotima is showcasing some of the most fascinating works in the modern and contemporary repertoire for string quartet, and paying tribute in the process to certain masters who have recently passed away: Pierre Boulez, with excerpts from his Livre pour quatuor, a wildly inventive experimental laboratory from his youth, and Kaija Saariaho, whose Terra memoria - dedicated to “those who have departed” – takes on a new dimension two years after the composer's death. And to conclude the evening, Debussy's only quartet, a masterpiece of the genre whose freedom, eloquence and sensuality are universally admired.
