Still young and already a memorable Dorabella in the historic production of Così fan tutte produced in Aix by Patrice Chéreau in 2005, the Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča has since conquered all the world’s stages by her warm, rounded voice, her sensational characterizations and her proud bearing. She returns to the Festival for the first time, accompanied by Malcolm Martineau, for an entirely original recital devoted to songs by Brahms, Strauss, Rachmaninov, and by Latvian composers Jāzeps Mediņš, Alfrēds Kalniņš and Jāzeps Vītols, given in the imposing surroundings of the Grand Théâtre de Provence.
