The young Casablanca-born Asmâa Hamzaoui is a virtuoso of the guembri, the sacred instrument of the Gnawa culture, resembling a lute. The musicians and singers of her group Bnat Timbouktou (the girls of Timbouktou) renew these hypnotically beautiful musical traditions from sub-Saharan Africa, whose public performance was a male prerogative until now.
