PREMIERE OF FALSTAFF

Alternating on the stage of the Théâtre de l’Archevêché with Le nozze di Figaro is Giuseppe Verdi’s witty legacy: Falstaff, an innovative opera in the tradition of Mozart’s and Rossini’s opera buffa.
With Verdi’s final, virtuoso opera, Australian stage director Barrie Kosky presents his first production at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, and imbues its amazingly vibrant score with brand-new theatrical life. The cast of this new Festival d’Aix-en-Provence production boasts two of the Festival’s iconic singers: the English bass-baritone Christopher Purves (Written on Skin, 2012) in the title role, and the French baritone Stéphane Degout (Così fan tutte, 2006; Pelléas et Mélisande, 2016; Pinocchio, 2017) as Ford. Singers, the choir and the orchestra of the Opéra de Lyon perform under the baton of Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni, in this three-act opera that reveals the irrepressibly excessive drive for life of a Bacchanalian hero as he fights against his concurrent fear of death.
> 6 performances from du 1st to 13 July at 9:30pm at the Théâtre de l'Archevêché
