In 2024, the Académie will be hosting a group of solo instrumentalists who wish to expand their experience with a multifaceted repertoire. Twelve musicians have been selected among the 125 applicants from 36 different nationalities. The applications were reviewed by directors of the Académie with the assistance of four members of the Ensemble intercontemporain: Odile Auboin (viola), Philippe Grauvogel (oboe), Lucas Lipari-Mayer (trumpet) and Samuel Favre (percussions).

The residency will also include one woman conductor, Sora Elisabeth Lee, chosen by the Académie and Pierre Bleuse, musical director of the Ensemble intercontemporain, from among 18 profiles. Working alongside the residency's instrumentalists, she will enjoy a tailor-made mentorship programme.

Songs & Fragments at the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume — along with the Ensemble’s artistic director, Pierre Bleuse, and opera singer Claron McFadden. The return of the Ensemble intercontemporain to the Festival d’Aix will help further intergenerational exchange among musicians, which the Académie has fostered since its inception in 1998.

The residency includes daily master classes and concerts that focus on the contemporary repertoire. On 5 July, the residency's instrumentalists and members of the Ensemble intercontemporain will come together for a remarkable final concert, conducted by Sora Elisabeth Lee and Pierre Bleuse, featuring a world premiere by composer Diana Soh for Claron McFadden, among other works.

The Instrumental Residency offers participants an opportunity to question what it means to be a musician today, by looking at the profession through an artistic lens — e.g. in terms of the diversity of repertoires, the deconstruction of aesthetic barriers, and the usefulness of musical outreach. Residents are invited to share their love of music, as well as the moments of dialogue and openness it represents, with their audiences.

Residents will perform in concert and during public master classes:

  • Public master class by Claron McFadden – 25 June, at the amphitheatre of the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède, at 11:30 a.m.
  • Public master class by the mentors from the Ensemble intercontemporain – 27 June, at the amphitheatre of the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède, at 11:30 a.m.
  • Public master class by Pierre Bleuse – 29 June, at the amphitheatre of the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède, at 11:30 a.m.
  • Concert #1 – 29 June, at the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède, at 9 p.m.
  • Final Concert of the Instrumental Residency – 5 July at the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède, at 9 p.m.
