The Licht cycle is simultaneously a work of art and a universe — i.e., the unsurpassable origins of something new that will change your relationship with the world once you’ve experienced it. Stockhausen devoted twenty-six years of his life to composing these seven operas, which he thought of as an eternal spiral, with neither beginning nor end, but in which every scene forms an independent piece. At Amsterdam, in June 2019, Pierre Audi presented aus LICHT, a fifteen-hour condensed version of the cycle that was uniquely new, sweeping in its scope, and structurally cohesive. At the Grande Halle, Parc des Ateliers from 29 June to 6 July a massive installation restyled this production into a mise en abyme, constructed from visuals and original portions of the set, augmented by filmed excerpts of this extraordinary project that revolutionized the way Stockhausen’s work is perceived.
