The project was born when Sir Simon Rattle decided to commission new creations with a strong vocal touch, involving local communities alongside professionals. The French version will be premiered on the 8th and 9th of July at the Grand theatre de Provence by the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra.

The roles of Theseus, his mother, and Daedalus will be performed by young singers, the Athenians and Cretans will be depicted by children, teenagers and adults from amateur choirs of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. The work will be premiered in German and English only a few days before, in Berlin by the Berliner Philharmoniker on the 30th of June 2015 and on the 5th of July in London by the LSO.

The French version of the opera will bring together all the diversity of the artists of the Festival in one performance, and it will initiate a collaboration between the young musicians of the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra and the LSO, and between adult and children amateurs choirs of the region and the young professional soloists of the Académie.
