The curtain rises this evening on the long-awaited 73rd edition of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. In the limelight tonight, at the Théâtre de l’Archevêché, will be Mozart’s most celebrated opera: Le nozze di Figaro!

With this four-act opera buffa—a great classic of the repertoire, and an eternally modern work—stage director Lotte de Beer makes her debut at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Perfectly attuned with her time, the director has taken this dark comedy about sex and power and created a vibrant burlesque production, in the spirit of commedia dell’arte. The opera, which shines out as the height of musical theatre, will be performed by a dazzling cast of actors-singers, and features German conductor Thomas Hengelbrock conducting the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble.

> 8 performances from 30 June to 16 July at 9:30pm at the Théâtre de l’Archevêché.
