[ PORTRAIT ] KIRILL GERSTEIN

Born in the former Soviet Union, now an American citizen based in Berlin, Kirill Gerstein combines razor-sharp interpretations with an accomplished technique and charismatic presence that make him one of the most sought-after musical personalities on the contemporary scene, particularly prized by today’s composers. This versatile artistry can be appreciated in a three-part portrait: chamber music recital, music theatre, and symphony concert. As a chamber musician, together with prestigious colleagues, Gerstein first performs two trios by Brahms and by Ligeti to open the final concert of the Chamber Music Residency, of which he is a mentor. He then leads a colourful and poetic cabaret evening, featuring a pantomime by Zemlinsky and committed songs by Weill and Eisler. Finally, he takes on Rachmaninoff’s fearsome and brilliant Third Concerto in a concert with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Susanna Mälkki.
