The Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja is one of the most fascinating and inventive artistic figures today: she shifts, without pretention, the patently agreed-upon structures of classical music in order to imbue them with new meaning. This year, the Festival devotes a fourfold portrait to this artist, in performances that explore her widely diverse formats and styles. She may first be heard with the London Symphony Orchestra in Stravinsky’s Concerto in D, in which her virtuoso playing embraces both light-hearted humour and elegiac lament to perfection. Next she is joined on the piano by Fazil Say—her spiritual brother in creative charisma—in a recital dedicated to three great sonatas of the repertoire. The highlight of the portrait is an evening at the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume, for which she has been given carte blanche: she will perform a fascinating piece by Nono that showcases her talents in improvisation and movement, followed by a very personal version of Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire. Lastly, she makes a friendly appearance in Barbara Hannigan’s recital, to play one of Messiaen’s early works, along with the pianist Bertrand Chamayou and the young tenor Charles Sy.
