MYO: A LOOK BACK AT THE FIRST 2020 INTERCULTURAL MEDINEA SESSIONS

From 13 to 27 February 2020 in Valletta, Malta, and from 2 to 15 March 2020 in Hammamet, Tunisia, some twenty artists from the Mediterranean Basin met with composer and jazz musician Fabrizio Cassol for two intercultural Medina sessions. The following are the key moments of these group artistic events.

— First session in Valletta, Malta

Led by Fabrizio Cassol, ten artists from Algeria, France, Greece, Malta, Portugal and Tunisia exchanged views on intercultural creation, and experienced the techniques of collective composition. They also benefited from the advice of Christiane Louis—head of career resources services at the Philharmonie de Paris and a specialist in professional development for musicians—and Yvette Buhagiar—a Maltese singer of Għana (traditional Maltese music), with whom the musicians composed a piece of music. On 26 and 27 February, the musicians of the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra performed in concert, first in a jazz bar at Valletta, and then at Robert Samut Hall in Floriana, accompanied vocally by Yvette Buhagiar.

— Second session in Hammamet, Tunisia

The second intercultural Medinea session united a dozen musicians from France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia. The musicians participated in a unique intercultural experience, creating together as an ensemble, and benefited from the advice and instruction of Fabrizio Cassol and Zied Zouari, a Tunisian violinist and composer. Due to health risks stemming from the Covid-19 epidemic, the three concerts initially planned had to be canceled. A closed-door concert was performed on 14 March, however, and rebroadcast for the enjoyment of viewers confined at home.

— Next sessions in Aix-en-Provence, France, and Nuoro, Italy

The next two intercultural Medinea sessions will take place from 2 to 20 July 2020 in Aix-en-Provence, and from 14 to 30 August in Nuoro, Italy. You will be able to hear artists from the Aix session on 16 July at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France, and on 18 July at the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède in Aix-en-Provence, as part of the Festival d’Aix.
