The Medinea network, founded by the Festival d’Aix, encourages and supports the emergence of young artists through a selection of training programmes. A new online programme, “Medinea On Air”, will be offered as of 12 April 2022. It is intended for young artists and musicians under the age of 30 from the Mediterranean Basin, including instrumentalists, conductors, improvisational musicians, and composers of music as part of the oral tradition.

This innovative pilot training programme is based on experiences developed by its members since the beginning of the health crisis, and utilises digital technology as a tool for dialogue, inclusion and creation. It aims to help fight against the obstacles to mobility that young Euro-Mediterranean artists face. Four sessions are planned between April 2022 and the spring of 2023 and will focus on the improvement of young artists’ skills and their career development.

Four themes have been chosen to respond to artists’ needs: preparation for auditions, the use of digital technology, career development, and Mediterranean aesthetics. A great variety of topics will be addressed, like stress and fluidity during a musical performance, how to create a relationship with your audience, and an introduction to the Taqsim tradition (i.e. improvised musical composition) in maqams. This last theme is also a testament to the significance and wealth of the Mediterranean culture, which is in part maintained thanks to the Medinea network and the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra of the Festival d’Aix. The musical institutions of the Medinea network have been involved for several years in forging ties and promoting intercultural dialogue; over time, the feeling of belonging to a common culture has grown and has opened the way to new independent projects, as demonstrated by the Mozaïc sextet and by Cairo Jazz Station, whose members include former participants of Medinea sessions. These online sessions also shine a light on the various aspects that constitute an artistic career, and the proficiencies that such a career mobilises: i.e. psychological skills (for auditions and concerts), digital skills (to showcase one’s own artistic background and career, and to communicate), and relational skills (to create a bond with audiences).

With the Medinea On Air programme, young artists will benefit from the most comprehensive educational resources in the Mediterranean via the Medinea network, which today comprises 30 partners from 17 countries. Participants will thus have the opportunity to train with high-level instructors from the Medinea network (teachers from specific musical disciplines, coaches, artists, experts in artistic promotion and career development, etc.).

This programme is supported by the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme. It is coordinated by the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, and includes five musical institutions in the Mediterranean Basin (Ente Musicale di Nuoro, in Italy; ARC Research and Consultancy, in Malta; Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, in Portugal; the Academy of Music of the University of Ljubljana, in Slovenia; and Istanbul Technical University / MIAM, in Turkey).
