International Women's Day: A Look Back at the 2025 Women Opera Makers Workshop
Share
2025 International Women's Day is a reminder that ‘rights, equality and empowerment’ for girls and women are essential pillars for societal progress. Aware that these issues are also significant in the world of opera, the Festival d’Aix has been actively working for many years — especially through its Académie — to foster the careers of women in opera.
Today marked the conclusion of the 2025 Women Opera Makers workshop session at the Académie du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. For nine years, this flagship academy programme has focused on gender inequality in the opera sector and made the awareness of this gender gap an integral part of the Festival: the Académie has actively promoted greater representation of women in opera, and addressed the challenges faced by female artists participating in the programme.
From 3 to 7 March, 13 women artists met under the guidance of stage director Katie Mitchell. Since 2016, Mitchell has annually supported the career development of female stage directors, composers, opera makers and conductors.
The Women Opera Makers workshop is supported by the SACD.
