ECO-DESIGN OF SETS AND ECO-RESPONSIBILITY: LIBÉRATION TAKES UP THE TOPIC

The eco-design of opera sets, initiated by the Festival d’Aix in 2012, is cited as an example by the daily newspaper Libération, who published an article on eco-responsibility in the performing arts in France on October 25, 2019.
The Festival d’Aix, a pioneer in the field, initiated an eco-responsible project in 2010, with a strategy for sustainable development, in particular by planning a research and development program on the eco-design of sets. In 2017, this project resulted in the first 100%-recyclable opera set, with the production of Carmen, directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov.
No one was talking about it at the time, and it has become a primary focus. […] The industry is now more responsible. In our contracts, visiting artists are offered to work that way without its being imposed. And they accept, like Romeo Castellucci, who made the topic a part of his production of Mozart’s Requiem.
