FIVE FILMS CENTERED AROUND TOSCA, SHOWN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CINEMAS AIXOIS AND THE INSTITUT DE L’IMAGE

Filmmakers have often incorporated the trope of the diva into their works—that fascinating creature of stage and sound, who lives “from art and from love,” and who exists outside the realms of time and death.

In his new production of Tosca, Christophe Honoré summons a panoply of divas from today and yesteryear; and the production marks the first performance of Puccini’s masterpiece at the Festival d’Aix.

Come discover or rediscover film characters inspired by the prima donna in five films being shown in parallel with the Festival’s new production of Tosca.

FILMS AND SHOW TIMES

WEDNESDAY 12 JUNE
Il bacio di Tosca, by Daniel Schmid (1984)
A documentary shot in the Casa di Riposo, a retirement home for artists in Milan founded by Giuseppe Verdi, where opera tunes still echo throughout the halls. The director captures the lodgers with sensitivity, like Sara Scuderi, a deeply-moving 87-year-old woman, as she sings Tosca.
INSTITUT DE L’IMAGE | 8:00 p.m. | 1h 27min

MONDAY 17 JUNE
Tosca nei luoghi e nelle ore di Tosca, by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi and Brian Large (1992)
From Chiesa Sant’Andrea della Valle to Castel Sant’Angelo and Palazzo Farnese, Catherine Malfitano (Floria Tosca), Ruggero Raimondi (Baron Scarpia) and Placido Domingo (Mario Cavaradossi) bring the opera Tosca to life, in the locations, time and space imagined by Puccini.
In the presence of Catherine Malfitano
INSTITUT DE L’IMAGE | 8:30 p.m. | 2h

WEDNESDAY 19 JUNE
Diva, by Jean-Jacques Beineix (1981)
A young mailman makes a bootleg recording of a concert given by a Diva who consistently refuses to let herself be recorded, and an unfortunate series of coincidences leads to a manhunt in which he is the target. This film, with its unlikely combination of opera and noir crime fiction, won the Césars for best first film and for best original music.
INSTITUT DE L’IMAGE | 8:30 p.m. | 1h 57min

SATURDAY 22 JUNE
Sunset Boulevard, by Billy Wilder (1950)
A great classic of American film noir, Sunset Boulevard tells the tale of Joe Gillis, a young impoverished screenwriter, and Norma Desmond, a forgotten silent-film star who lives on the famous boulevard. Mixing drama and dark humor, the film illustrates the cynicism of the American movie industry.
In the presence of Christophe Honoré (to be confirmed)
LE MAZARIN | 5:30 p.m. | 1h 50min

MONDAY 24 JUNE
Maria by Callas, by Tom Volf (2017)
This documentary reveals Maria Callas’s incredible life and work through previously unreleased footage and documents, including performance videos, photos, and correspondence with friends and loved ones. It is a private look at a legend, with all the emotion of one of this world’s unique voices.
