SESSION COMPOSITION COLLECTIVE 2024

Since 2015, the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée (OJM) has been offering creation sessions blending traditions, sounds, aesthetics, and instruments. Drawing on its Mediterranean partners, the OJM has organized eleven sessions in Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, Tunisia, and Turkey, in addition to the annual sessions in Aix. In 2022, the OJM experimented with a new format, doubling the number of musicians in this session to twenty-five improvising musicians from diverse backgrounds (jazz, traditional music, etc.). In 2024, following the success with the public and the enthusiasm of the musicians from the session, the OJM is proposing a new session as part of the celebration of its 40 years of existence.

The concert at the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud will bring together, under the artistic direction of Fabrizio Cassol, a group of fifteen former participants, showcasing a wide range of Mediterranean strings, voices, and languages. Based entirely on memorization, without any notation, this program will blend collective compositions and OJM repertoire, stimulating a re-examination of the very concept of the orchestra and the relationship between voice and instruments.

This session highlights the instrumental and musical diversity of Europe and the Mediterranean, the current vitality and excellence of sometimes ancient musical practices, and the inspiration they represent for today's musicians.
