This is the story of Tamino, a young foreign prince who, on the orders of the Queen of the Night, ventures into the kingdom of Sarastro and faces terrible ordeals out of love for Pamina. It is also the story of Papageno, a cheeky bird-catcher who only dreams of eating, drinking and ... finding his Papagena! The Magic Flute is Mozart’s last operatic work and also the most amazing thanks to its mixture of genres and styles, from fantastic tale to philosophical fable, from Viennese comedy to virtuoso opera. An essential part of any Mozart festival such as the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, this Mozart’s masterpiece is presented in Simon McBurney’s fascinating production. The British director returns to the magic of theatrical entertainment through his everpoetic use of technology and his in-depth reading of the libretto, whose universal appeal stems from its very diversity. At the heart of the staging, the Ensemble Pygmalion will perform under the baton of Raphaël Pichon, conducting this Mozart’s masterpiece for the first time.
