The new production of Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence is undeniably a major event of this summer.

To perform this quintessential masterpiece of German Romanticism, which is so musically modern that it is unfailingly unsettling, the Festival has brought together a cast of the first order, led by British conductor Sir Simon Rattle, whose production of Wagner’s Tetralogy has left an enduring memory on the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. The title roles are embodied by two legendary Wagnerian artists: the Swedish soprano Nina Stemme and the Australian tenor Stuart Skelton. In the pit, the London Symphony Orchestra, who are quite simply astounding thanks to their intensity and precision, put the audience in a state of ecstatic rapture. Through his realism, stage director Simon Stone brings out the sacred dimension of this great classic of the repertoire.

> 5 performances from 2 to 15 July at 6pm at the Grand Théâtre de Provence
