A KEY MOMENT FOR THE CHAMBER MUSIC RESIDENCY

As Aix en juin opens tonight for the 2019 edition of the Festival d’Aix, the first artists are arriving and settling in for a summer at Aix-en-Provence.
The chamber music residency of the Académie du Festival d'Aix began on Monday. Three string quartets – the Agate, Elmire and Selini quartets – and a trio with piano – the Trio Sōra, 2017 HSBC Laureate of the Académie – have been invited to hone their talents under András Keller, violinist of the Keller Quartet, and David Alberman—violinist, former member of the Arditti Quartet for nearly a decade, and second violin principal of the London Symphony Orchestra.
During the 12-day residency, the young ensembles will refine their approach to all repertoires, from the great classical scores to pieces with a contemporary language. Wolfgang Rihm, an essential figure in today’s musical landscape, and whose opera, Jakob Lenz, is on the bill at this year’s festival, is taking center stage in this 2019 residency. The four participating ensembles will perform a selection of this German composer’s string quartets.
Three chamber music concerts are scheduled for nightfall, at 9:30 p.m., in the courtyard of the Hôtel Maynier:

A fourth concert, on tour at Gignac-la-Nerthe on Wednesday, June 19 at 7 p.m., is being offered with the support of the Territoire Pays d'Aix - Métropole Aix-Marseille Provence.
You may also attend public, artist-led master classes or observe a work session with the young ensembles, at 12 p.m. (noon) in the amphitheater at the Hôtel Maynier d'Oppède, on June 13 with András Keller or on June 19 with David Alberman.
