OLIVIER MESSIAEN
Harawi, Chant d’amour et de mort

Julia Bullock dedicates the second part of her portrait-recital to Olivier Messiaen's Harawi, a moving cycle of twelve songs for soprano and piano based on a Peruvian variant of the myth of Tristan and Iseult. This 'Song of Love and Death' – as stated in the subtitle – mixes the composer's words with Quechua onomatopoeia. Two dancers of the American Modern Opera Company share the stage with the performers. Together, they narrate a story – incredibly difficult to execute – where voice and bodies are key elements.
