DIRECTED BY CHARLES BRYANT — 1923

Charles Bryant's Salome (1923), which is directly adapted from Oscar Wilde's play – just as Richard Strauss' opera – is considered one of the first American art films. Stylized costumes, expressionist acting, minimalist set design and "Art Nouveau" atmosphere are the hallmarks of this unclassifiable work. It is carried by Alla Nazimova, one of the great stars of silent cinema known for her magnetic presence.

Film echoing Salome by Richard Strauss.
