The Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and its staff support the condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and express their emotion and solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
The Festival is immediately suspending all collaboration with Russian cultural institutions. Likewise, the Festival will no longer invite Russian artists who publicly expressed their support for the government or for the ongoing invasion.
Russian repertoire plays an important part in opera’s history and is regularly presented on the Festival’s stages, as was the case with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel, Igor Stravinsky’s Rake’s Progress, and Dmitri Shostakovich’s The Nose.
The Festival will continue to keep this cultural heritage alive and pays tribute to the courage of the Russian artists who have expressed their opposition to this invasion.
