“With The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, Brecht reappropriates and distorts the classic theme of the « ideal city » in order to criticise the moral values of unrestrained capitalism. This writing procedure was used during the same period in Metropolis, one of the greatest chefs-d’œuvres in the history of cinema. The German film director Fritz Lang dramatised in it the exploitation of the working classes by the ruling classes in a futuristic and frightening megalopolis.
Everything opposes Mahagonny and Metropolis – one is libertarian, the other totalitarian – but they are the expression of the same rejection of a society perceived as unjust.”
