For over ten years now, the Festival’s productions have been exported all around the world, to the delight of opera-lovers. In 2018, ten or so productions have travelled the world, putting on around fifty performances. This autumn, 4 productions will be presented in Italy, Russia and Japan.

Created in 2005 and revisited in 2009 at the Festival, The Magic Flute directed by William Kentridge will be performed in Japan, conducted by Roland Böer at the New National Theatre in Tokyo. Handel’s Alcina will also be performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, directed by Katie Mitchell in 2015 and presented for the first time in Russia. This tour is part of an ongoing partnership between the theatre and the Festival, which has already enabled Russian audiences to enjoy Written on Skin by George Benjamin and Trauernacht on Motets by Johann Sebastian Bach, both directed by the British artist. Elektra by Richard Strauss, a resounding success at the Festival d’Aix 2013 directed by Patrice Chéreau, will be performed again at La Scala in Milan. Lastly, Don Giovanni, directed by Jean-François Sivadier at the Théâtre de l’Archevêché in 2017, will round off this autumn series of tours with several performances in Bologna.
