DISCOVER THE OPERATIC UNIVERSE WITH OPERA PLAY, THE NEW APPLICATION OF THE FESTIVAL D’AIX!

Opera Play, the new free application of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, is all about learning whilst having fun. It is available for downloading now from stores (Google Play and App Store) ! Designed and produced by Sonic Solveig, in partnership with DRAC Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, it offers an array of original and interactive musical games to discover singing and lyric voices and is targeted at everyone, from the novice to the knowledgeable music lover!
With Opera Play, the opera opens its doors to you! As you browse, listen to the story and the characteristics of each tessitura and its legendary interpreters; feel the power of extracts from grand arias – selected from recordings of performances at Festival d‘Aix in the past ten years; test your knowledge and take part in games to recognise tones from recordings of Mozart arias by the artists of the Académie du Festival d’Aix 2017, produced specifically for these games; and thanks to a karaoke, get on stage and have fun performing two famous arias from Carmen!
This range of interactive games makes this application and ideal learning tool, for children and adults alike. Partners of the educational and socio-artistic services of Festival d’Aix tested the application prior to its release: discover their feedback now, which is sure to convince you! All you have to do now is download it and tell others about it!

Opera Play offers a fun approach to the opera. Our students appreciate digital mediation tools. The possibility of recording oneself doing karaoke to grand arias is a real bonus to arouse the interest of our audiences to the world of opera.

To make this operatic universe even more aesthetic on screen, Sonic Solveig and illustrator Camille de Cussac chose to associate each type of voice with a natural element: so, the soprano is compared to the lightness of a feather; the smoothness of a mezzo-soprano to the colours of flowers; the texture of a tenor voice to plant contours; the power of the baritone to sea animals; and the depth of a bass voice to rock cavities.
I tested the application prior to release for my students! Now, students are provided with a digital tablet from the age of 13. Opera Play is a fun educational tool to understand and identify the different tessiture of opera. I personally liked the quiz game to recognise tones and the idea of associating a graphic universe to a tessiture.
