Bernard Foccroulle, General Director of the Festival d'Aix, has received the Leadership Award during the fifth edition of the International Opera Awards, organized on 7 May 2017 at the London Coliseum. Each year, this award distinguishes the best artists and professionals in the world of opera.

The newly created Leadership Award, supported by the Good Governance Institute, honors a personality who has distinguished himself by his leadership and ability to be a source of inspiration and by applying the principles of good governance to an opera house. This prize rewards the work carried out over the past 25 years by Bernard Foccroulle, both at the Théâtre royal de la Monnaie in Brussels (1992-2006) and at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence (since 2007). The Opera Awards jury acknowledged the new momentum that Bernard Foccroulle has brought to the Festival d'Aix, strengthening both its local roots and its international reputation, thanks to co-productions and tours around the world, regular commissions and premieres of contemporary works, "extra muros" programmes throughout the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, educational and socio-artistic projects including hundreds of schools and associations, and an ambitious policy of accessibility for all the audiences. This prize also acknowledges Bernard Foccroulle's commitment to training and supporting young artists, marked by the development of the Académie du Festival d'Aix and the creation of enoa (European Network of Opera Academies).
