ASSESSING THE FESTIVAL’S ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Share
After two years of preparatory work and data collection, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence completed its environmental impact assessment in March.
This ambitious undertaking is an integral part of the Festival’s ecological transition plan, developed collaboratively with all its teams and published in January 2024. It is based on the SEEDS calculator, specifically developed by the Arviva network for use by cultural organisations.
The carbon emissions generated by the Festival amount to 4,201 tCO₂eq (2023 figures). Of this total, a significant proportion is attributed to travel – 57% is attributed to audience travel, 14% to general operations, 13% to freight (touring productions), 12% to activity-related emissions (especially artist travel to Aix in June and during the Festival in July) and 4% to buildings.
Festival departments were actively involved in identifying and collecting the extensive data required for this analysis. The results offer insight into the scale and distribution of environmental impacts. This collaborative effort also increases the momentum for the Festival’s ecological transition within the various departments, and encourages teams to develop additional complementary indicators.
