Oharu, a former prostitute, shares memories of her life, marked by hardship and tragedy. Kenji Mizoguchi’s cult film The Life of Oharu depicts the mores of Japanese feudal society, governed by patriarchy and social hierarchy. Oharu’s life is caught up in a maelstrom of suffering, renunciation and self-sacrifice.
