“Falstaff is me!” Orson Welles said in 1965 at the release of the film he would consider the masterpiece of his entire career. Like Giuseppe Verdi before him, he drew from the world of William Shakespeare to create a ludicrous yet touching character that included much of the actor-director’s own personality as well. Behind this story of betrayed friendship and lost youth lies a metaphor of the artist who remains powerless when faced with the power of mankind.
