LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, op. 95 « Quartetto Serioso »
String Quartet No. 13 in B flat major, op. 130 with the Great Fugue op. 133
The Spanish Cuarteto Casals dedicates the second half of its Beethoven diptych to two works that were landmark events in the history of music: the thoroughly modern Opus 95, also known as the “Quartetto serioso,” in reference to the tempo and the name of its third movement, and the String Quartet No. 13, whose very original Große Fuge (“Great Fugue”) represents one of the high points in all of chamber music.
