NEW PRODUCTION OF THE FESTIVAL D’AIX-EN-PROVENCE
A COPRODUCTION WITH THÉÂTRE STANISLAVSKI
Only one thing matters: learning to be the loser.Cioran: The Trouble with Being Born, 1973
Immoral and implausible: these two criticisms have long been used in describing Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Some find implausible this story of a bet made by three men who use disguises and trickery to find out a basic truth about women: are or are they not faithful? From this Marivaux-esque comedy, Mozart created an ambivalent, sensual and profoundly human masterpiece. The experiment quickly gets out of hand, leaving none of the characters unscathed… In sync with the vision of both the composer and the librettist, director Dmitri Tcherniakov takes the logic of this game of love and chance, and pushes it to the extreme: the experiment of these middleage couples, confined to an implacably claustrophobic setting, eventually brings magnificent disputes, smouldering embraces, and powerful emotions. The result is all the more intense thanks to a great Mozartean conductor making his Aix debut for the occasion: Thomas Hengelbrock, who will be conducting the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble.
