The Festival d’Aix, a pioneer in the field, initiated an eco-responsible project in 2010, with a strategy for sustainable development, in particular by planning a research and development program on the eco-design of sets. In 2017, this project resulted in the first 100%-recyclable opera set, with the production of Carmen, directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov.
No one was talking about it at the time, and it has become a primary focus. […] The industry is now more responsible. In our contracts, visiting artists are offered to work that way without its being imposed. And they accept, like Romeo Castellucci, who made the topic a part of his production of Mozart’s Requiem.
Storage, recycling of sets, short channels, the transport and a reduction in the number of components for sets on tour, the creation of materials libraries…: in France, the live performing arts is teeming with ideas, and has started a number of active regional initiatives that are committed to walking the walk as well as talking the talk.
