The musicians of the Esmé Quartet, 2018 HSBC Laureate, honours two of their fellow countrywomen, the Korean composers Unsuk Chin et Soo Yeon Lyuh, as well as the chef-d’œuvre Death and the Maiden, the allegory through which Schubert pays a tribute just as much to the genre of the lied as he does to the genre of the string quartet.
John Chest (baritone) — 2015 HSBC Laureate
Marcelo Amaral (piano)
Associated with pianist Marcelo Amaral, John Chest presents Die Schöne Maguelone by Johannes Brahms. Of all the rich lieder production composed by Brahms, Romances of Maguelone by Ludwig Tieck op.33 is the only true cycle. Brahms knew these folk tales since childhood but it is thanks to Schumann that he discovered the novel by Ludwig Tieck. The work is representative of this poetic and idealized reinvention of the Middle Ages, characteristic of German Romanticism.
"It is especially the epic scale of the cycle - a real pocket opera supported by a piano writing of great complexity - that strikes the listener" writes Timothée Picard in the booklet.
